The Best Time to Update Your Professional Headshots and Portraits

Every so often, someone reaches out to me and Harmony about updating their headshots or creating a new set of professional portraits. We schedule a consultation to discuss ideas and goals. We explore what they want the images to communicate, and occasionally, after all of that, they decide to wait. Not because they aren't excited. Not because they don't see the value. Not because they've changed their mind. They're simply not quite ready.
At first glance, that might sound like a missed opportunity. Harmony and I don't see it that way. The truth is that the best portraits aren't created because a calendar has an opening. They're created when the timing, purpose, and story align.
Professional portraits often mark a moment in someone's life. A new business. A promotion. A career change. A creative pursuit. A major accomplishment. Sometimes they're a celebration of how far you've come. Sometimes they're a declaration of where you're headed next.
When you're standing in the middle of a transition, it can be difficult to know exactly which story you're trying to tell and that's perfectly normal. We live in a culture that encourages constant motion. Update the website. Refresh the LinkedIn profile. Launch the next thing. Stay visible. Stay relevant. There is value in all of that. There is also value in waiting until the picture becomes a little clearer.
Some of the most meaningful portraits happen when people reach a point where they can confidently say, "This is who I am. This is where I'm going. This is the chapter I want to remember." Those images tend to carry something special. A sense of confidence. Direction. Purpose. The camera notices.
If you're considering updating your professional headshots or creating a new portrait session, don't worry about whether the timing is perfect. Instead, ask yourself a simple question: "What story do I want these images to tell?"
If you know the answer, wonderful. If you're still figuring it out, that's okay too.
Not every opportunity needs to happen immediately. Sometimes the most meaningful opportunities are simply waiting for the right moment, and when that moment arrives, the story is usually worth the wait.

We created this portrait during a particularly exciting chapter in her life. The session wasn't about reinventing herself, but it was about celebrating who she had become and where she was headed next. I chose this image for the article because it captures something I see in many of my clients: confidence earned through experience and optimism for what comes next.
